Rain doesn`t dampen the spirit of netballers Share This Post

THE rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of more than 1500 Queensland netballers who turned out in full force for the 2012 State Age Championships, proudly supported by the Queensland Government.

As one of the biggest events on the Netball Queensland calendar, the State Age Championships attracts the best young athletes from around the state to compete in the three-day competition.

Held at Sunshine Coast Netball Association, the location did not live up to its name and the netballers battled the elements over the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend, facing wind and rain to compete. But it did not stop them from enjoying the Championships.

On Monday, June 11, the competitors were treated to a visit from Mission Queensland Firebird Keirra Trompf who made a visit to cheer teams on.

Netball Queensland Event Operations Manager Adam Barry said despite the weather, the event was a huge success.

"Sunshine Coast Netball Association did a fantastic job hosting the 2012 State Age Championships, even if they couldn’t put on the weather for the weekend," he said.

"But despite the rain, all 160 teams involved had a great time.

"The State Age Championships could not go ahead without the support of volunteers, officials, umpires and of course the Queensland Government who supported the Championships this year."

Netball Queensland CEO Cameron O’Hara said the State Age Championships were a critical pathway for developing athletes, coaches and umpires in Queensland.

"Each year State Age Championships continues to grow both in numbers and in the calibre of young athletes competing," he said.

"We are appreciative of the support from the Queensland Government in 2012 to promote a healthy lifestyle through sport and recreation in what will be the biggest State Age Championship yet."
